Our children and young people are putting ‘COMPASSION INTO ACTION’ by performing Simple Acts as part of refugee week 2023. They’ll be singing to raise money for vital local charity, Hackney Migrant Centre, who offer support to vulnerable migrants. Our concert is a listed REFUGEE WEEK event

We can’t wait for this year’s Summer course. A week long singing adventure that includes activities, guest artist workshops, fantastic professional musicians and more.

Hackney Choral Sings Christmas in Aid of GOSH Charity - St Christopher’s Chapel, Great Ormond St Hospital, 13 December 7pm

We sang a Christmas concert in aid of Great Ormond Street hospital Charity. We performed in the beautiful St Christopher’s Chapel at the hospital. We raised £1235 for this vital charity that cares for seriously ill children.

 

Songs In Celebration, 17 October, 5.30pm, St Paul’s West Hackney - A BHM Fundraising Concert in aid of ‘Children With Voices’

We celebrated Black History Month whilst fundraising for local charity, Children With Voices , a vital service that fights to improve the lives of children and young people.
Our fundraiser will helped to purchase some desperately needed cold food storage for the their food hub. We raised £1010!

 

A Royal Celebration, 25 May 7.30pm, House of St Barnabas Chapel

Celebrating the the Platinum Jubilee through music, our fundraising concert was in aid of the HOSB, whose employment academy supports homeless people into work. We sang in the beautiful Chapel and raised some funds for this essential charity.

 

Dig Deep Christmas Fundraiser & Track Launch in Aid of Centrepoint

We finally launched our Dig Deep track and Go Fund Me campaign on behalf of Centrepoint youth homelssness charity. The Christmas fundraiser was a great success and along with the Go Fund Me, we have raised more that £1000 for this essential charity. Thank you to all those who have suppoted us and contributed to this campaign to make a difference.

 

Remembrance Evensong

The Senior Choir sang Remembrance Evensong for parents/carers & community leaders on Monday the 15th of November. They worked very hard and sounded lovely.

 

TASTER DAY - SAT 19 JUNE 2021 2-4PM, ST PAULS WEST HACKNEY

Thanks to everyone that joined in the taster day for our Senior Choir. For young people in Y6 and above, this fun-packed afternoon gave them an insight into how the weekly Monday Choir works. There were games, we learnt two pieces of music from different styles and made a recording. We also danced the Electric Slide!

In support of young people’s homeless charity Centrepoint, using their own words, out young people expressed how to be resilient and move forward in the face of adversity. Virtual Guest Workshop with Musician/Choir Director Sam Chaplin

This November, we invited fantastic singer/musician/Choir Director, Sam Chaplin, to deliver a workshop during our Zoom session. Amongst other things, Sam runs the Sing It Out Choir and also directs the Choir With No Name for people affected by homelessness. Sam got us singing Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ with moves and attitude!

On 2 November we were thrilled to welcome the fantastic singer, Mary Pearce, to deliver a Masterclass during our rehearsal. A backing vocalist, session singer and all round talent, Mary has sung with everyone from Stevie Wonder & Donna Summer, to Rita Ora & George Ezra. Our young people hung on her every word as she gave them her invaluable top tips and taught some excellent singing. What an experience!

I HAVE A DREAM - BLACK HISTORY MONTH FUNDRAISER FOR SISTAH SPACE

Listen to our track and help us raise funds!

During lockdown, the Senior Choir created a virtual track called ‘I Have a Dream’. Inspired by freedom, justice and the Black Lives Matter Campaign, our young people are using the track to raise money for our favourite local charity, Sistah Space. This important charity support women of African & Caribbean heritage who experience domestic abuse.

Summer Choral Course 2020 Monday 27-Thursday 30 July

Our Summer Course was a huge success! We delivered daily online singing sessions via Zoom & Facebook Live, we had fun activities, and daily online masterclasses with special guest artists! We also be devised our own track based on participants’ lockdown experiences.

Monday: Abigail Kelly - ‘Summertime’ Porgy & Bess

This inspirational opera singer sang ‘ Summertime’, talked about how to improve your voice and gave some top singing tips. We are so lucky!

Tuesday - !

1. Valerie Etienne & David Gallagher - ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ Frank Sinatra

Singer/songwriter Valerie Etienne & multi-instrumentalist David Gallagher performed their version of fly me to the moon. They gave us their top tips and talked about what it was like to tour around the world!

2. Charlotte Barbour-Condini - ‘The Fanfare’  from ‘The  Fanfare of Dance’ by Bob Margolis 

Charlotte is a recorder player and violinist who reached the final of Young Musician of The Year. Charlotte plays all over the world, and after telling us all about her instrument, we were able to get to hear her play this fantastic piece - what a treat!

Wednesday - Kwesi Edman

Kwesi is a cellist who who shared his truly inspiring story of how he learnt to play the cello

The senior choir joined English Touring Opera in a semi-staged production of Bach’s St John Passion at the Hackney Empire on Thursday 5th March. Our young singers learned English chorales in new translations as well as a number of German movements contrasting solo voices with treble chorus.

The choir sang a Christmas fundraiser for the House of St Barnabas in Greek Street, Soho, on Monday 16th December 2019, alongside singers from St Paul’s Cathedral choir. The concert raised over £700 for the HOSB academy, breaking the cycle of homelessness. It was followed by a reception for friends and supporters of the choir.

We held a fundraiser Sistah Space as part of Black History Month on Monday 28th October 2019, to support local women of African heritage who are at risk of domestic abuse. The choir sang to a packed hall, including the Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, and Councillor Antoinette Bramble. The concert raised £494.38 for their important work.

summer choral course 2019 a hit with 50 young people

Fifty young people joined us for a fun-packed week of music, sport, BBQs and games. We rounded off a great week together with a concert in Hackney, and then Choral Evensong in St Paul’s Cathedral, attended by 150 family members and friends. Music included everything from James Bond to Wesley, Blessed be the God and Father. The course returns on Saturday 14th December for a day of Christmas singing, and summer 2020 from Monday 27th to Friday 31st July. Bookings now being taken.

choir makes debut with Vivaldi gloria

The choir gave a rousing performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria, with professional soloists and orchestra, and joined by friends from St Paul’s Cathedral Choir. This debut concert brought 100 local people together to hear our young people’s voices, tackling one of the choral greats.

Senior Choir visits King’s College, Cambridge

We made a trip to King’s College, Cambridge on Saturday 8th June to do a choral workshop on the Vivaldi Gloria with Sir Stephen Cleobury, whose knighthood was announced that very day. We also were able to see the world-famous King’s Choir in rehearsal, and finished the day with Evensong.

NEw senior choir launched on monday 22nd april

We launched our new senior choir on Monday 29th April at St Paul’s West Hackney. Each Monday, we offer a homework space with pizza to our members from 4pm, and sing great music in a range of styles from 4.45-6pm. Membership is open to all those who love music, aged 11-18. You can sign up by visiting ‘Join a Choir’.

The choir performs every term, makes trips, raises money for charity and good causes, and links with other local organisations.

 

Hackney children’s choir SANG at st paul’s cathedral

On Sunday 10th February at 6pm, the children’s choir sang at Holy Communion at the Cathedral. It was wonderful to see friends and supporters there. The children offered musical treats, including pieces by Edward Elgar, James MacMillan, Josef Rheinberger, and Andrew Reid.

 

New recording made on wednesday 13th march 2019

Hackney Choral is part of a recording project with the Cantignorus Chorus, and will record a medley of 50s and 60s hits on Wednesday 13th March. We’re using Angel Recording Studios in Islington where everyone from the Beatles to Pink Floyd have recorded at one time or another. Holy ground indeed!
